Tuna Research Made Visual
FOR MORE SUSTAINABLE OCEANS
Advancing sustainable oceans – through visual science communication
Since 2014, we’ve been working with the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) to communicate their tuna research and processes. Our long-term and strategically-focused work has helped a broad range of audiences deeply engage in ISSF’s work and has made ISSF’s mission and accomplishments more clear.
ISSF stakeholders – including tuna producer companies, fishing vessel owners, seafood retailers, policymakers, non-profits, non-governmental organizations and the ISSF board – are now better able to understand the context and implications of the organization’s research and collaborations.
Our Work Includes: INFOGRAPHICS, DATAVIS, PUBLICATIONS, INTERACTIVE
PROJECT IMPACT
Through long-term collaboration, we help ISSF strategically put their research into context and show their impact throughout the sustainable tuna industry.
Our Partner:
This Organization's Focus:
Ongoing, Strategic Visual Communication – Over many years. From digital reports, infographics, illustrations, animations, social media, and icons, we translate highly technical information to multiple ISSF audiences.
Tracking Company Compliance – As a visual representation of how ISSF participating companies perform, year-after-year.

Animated Conservation Measures outline the structure of seafood industry commitments to sustainable practices: navigating through multiple measures and categories.
To celebrate progress on ISSF's strategic plan and their 10-year anniversary, we designed a series of Social Media Graphics that use consistent visual language – creating cohesion across the organization and within separate initiatives.
ISSF's Research Provides Regular Updates – That's why we developed infographics and data visualization that can be updated as new data is available. This creates consistency across all ISSF reports and streamlines new materials.
Through an 8+ year relationship, we've gradually and strategically Evolved the ISSF Brand. This includes a library of 50+ icons for at-a-glance identification of ISSF materials. Shown right: icons for aspects of ISSF Conservation Measures.
Illustration and text are integrated to Provide Context to Highly Technical Information. We frequently design infographics to reach audiences across multiple channels. This infographic –showing research on new technologies in selective fishing– was also divided into a series of social media assets.
“I can come to the Background Stories team with almost any communications challenge and know they will find a creative solution. They are more than designers: They are trusted communication advisors.”
